Ravens' Comeback Stuns Cyclones, Advance to CSAC Semifinals

Widdicombe Scores Tying and Game Winning Goals

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. - The Rosemont women's soccer team, seeded #6 in the CSAC Postseason Tournament, rebounded from a 2-0 deficit with less than 15 minutes left in today's game to grab the win in the second overtime of today's CSAC Quarterfinal game. The Ravens' Savannah Widdicombe tallied her second goal of the game in the second overtime to complete the 3-2 comeback, upset victory over the host #3-seeded Centenary Cyclones.

After an evenly played first 30 minutes, it appeared that Centenary's offense was starting to look more threatening. After a scoreless first half, Centenary continued their offensive pressure and the Cyclones started to ease in front in time of possession, eventually leading to a goal in the 63rd minute from Jessica Benoit on an assist from Sam Bombardiere to give Centenary the 1-0 lead.

Just 3:17 later the Cyclones would earn some insurance when Lorraine Dedrick beat two defenders to give Centenary a 2-0 lead with 23:46 left in the game, and things started to look bleak for Rosemont.

But the Ravens reached down deep and took advantage of a great scoring opportunity in the 76th minute when Payton Kanagie beat the Centenary keeper to give the Ravens some hope, trailing by a 2-1 score with 14:09 left on the clock.

The momentum that the Ravens found in the final 15 minutes of regulation continued to build, when Savannah Widdicombe found herself with the ball between the Centenary keeper and the goal. Widdicombe rocketed home a shot to knot the game at 2-2 with an assist from Lindsay Wong in the 83rd minute.

The Ravens continued to apply pressure for the rest of regulation, but the second half ended with a tie score, sending the game to overtime.

In the first 10-minute overtime period the Cyclones out-shot the Ravens 3-2, but the Ravens had the only shot on goal. The overtime ended with no further scoring, sending the game into the second overtime.

The only shot in the second overtime came off the boot of Savannah Widdicombe who shot into the corner of the goal off passes from Lindsay Wong and Cassidy Steiner only 54 seconds into the final period to complete Rosemont's upset of the Cyclones.

Rosemont keeper Andrea Dossantos was solid between the posts for Rosemont, saving nine of 11 Centenary shots-on-goal.

Rosemont Head Coach Aaron Tritch commented about his team's comeback effort in today's game. "In the 2nd half, changing our center back to left back to deal with the pace, and pushing our junior captain to center back in that space, we started to find wider space in the middle that opened up the game for us." When asked about who his standout players were today,  "Great play from Savannah with 2 goals. She was the difference for us today. Not giving up after being down 2 goals, and turning it into something that motivated us, waking up and scoring that first goal from a player who recently returned from an injury really woke us up."

About Centenry, Tritch added that, "Centenary has been our achilles heel for the last few years, and they're a very good program. The feeling of us, the #6 seed, knocking off the #3 seed; the season was more of an upset for us, with the injuries and having to put our young players on the field for most of the year, I think now we know who works well together, and their niches on the field. We are now getting into our prime where in years earlier we were starting to wear down at this point of the season. We're optimistic about playing a Cabrini team that likes to possess as much as we do. I was very proud of our captains and especially seniors: Gina, Alana, and Jen. We gave the game ball to Alana, stepping in to center-mid and winning some 50-50s at the beginning of our comeback was a big difference for us, and I'm very proud of her."

The Ravens will celebrate today's win, but only for a short time as they must prepare to face the #1-seeded Cabrini Cavaliers on Wednesday night in a CSAC Semifinal match. The game is scheduled for a 6:30pm start.
