On Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012, the Rosemont College community, the Phillie Phanatic and mascots from eight other area colleges and universities welcomed our new mascot, Renny the Raven.
The event began with all the mascots marching from McShain Auditorium to Alumnae Hall to meet Rosemont students, faculty, administrators, and staff. Predator D Owl from Bryn Mawr College, Capt. Calvin Cavlier from Cabrini College, the Chestnut Hill Griffin, Mighty Mac from Immaculata University, the La Salle University Explorer, the Neumann University Knight, the St. Joe's University Hawk, and Will D. Cat, the Villanova University Wildcat all followed Philly's favorite green mascot up the hill and into the gym, where they were all introduced by Rosemont President Sharon Latchaw Hirsh.
President Hirsh then explained to a packed crowd of Rosemont students, faculty and staff and local media how the name "Renny" was chosen.
"We always had a name for our team [the Ramblers], but we never had a true athletic mascot" Hirsh said. "And since we went co-ed, it was important to get ourselves a mascot." The College held a contest to name the raven. It ran from the beginning of the semester through October 30 when more than 80 names were submitted from the entire community of learners for consideration. Once the top five were identified, they were put to a vote, and the name Renny was the clear choice. The name Renny is of Irish and Gallic origin, which means "small and mighty.."
"The name ties into our new college tag line -- THE POWER OF SMALL," she said.
After President Hirsh made her remarks, The Phanatic lined up all the mascots for a "boot camp," where he taught them all some of his famous moves. This is where the mayhem started. The mascots were more interested in dancing with students, being rambunctious, and generally wreaking havoc. It was a really fun event. It took a lot of convincing, but all the mascots finally got together for a picture with President Hirsh before posing for photos with students and staff afterward.
Go Renny ! Go Ravens!

August, 2009
As part of its wider plan to emphasize and expand its enrollment, programs, and reputation by embracing co-education, partnerships, and online education, Rosemont College is pleased to announce a new athletic identity, which will serve as the face of Rosemont College. The College has replaced the Rosemont Ramblers and corresponding Rambling Rose logo with the Rosemont Ravens. The new identity was unveiled on Sunday, August 30, 2009 following the College's Convocation Ceremony.
The men's soccer team will be the first to don the insignia on their uniforms for their game against Valley Forge Christian College on Saturday, September 5.
Since 1983, the College's athletic programs have been known as the Rosemont Ramblers. With the start of a new era of educational and athletic opportunities for both men and women, the College's administration felt the change was important to implementing its newly adopted Strategic Plan.
The Ravens emerged as the winner following a public, online survey which was conducted by the College this past spring and included input from current students, alumni, faculty, staff, and the administration. Over 60% of the survey participants were alumni of the College. "Today we celebrate the rich history and tradition of the well-established spirit of Rosemont athletics," said Lynn Rothenhoefer, Athletics Director at the unveiling. "At the same time, we celebrate our athletic re-founding with this new visual identity that is contemporary and powerful."
Later this fall, the College will retire "Rosie, the Rosemonster," which has been the College's school mascot, separate from the athletic mascot, since 1988.
Rosemont's athletic identity project was led by Maryland based North Charles Street Design Organization. The Ravens' logo will be displayed on everything from the multipurpose gym floor to team uniforms and memorabilia. A new team plush will be unveiled later this year and a "Name the Mascot" contest has been announced.
The new Rosemont Ravens primary mark is included with this release. The primary and secondary logos are also available on the Rosemont Ravens site (http://www.rosemont.edu/athletics/). In addition, the department will continue to use maroon (PMS color 188) and grey (PMS color 430) as its official colors, while utilizing white and black as accent colors in many of the logos and marks.

History of Athletics Mascot
                                                    Â
In 1983 the athletic teams designated themselves as "The Ramblers," which means a climbing rose. This designation was separate from the school mascot. Following the 2008 decision to become a fully coeducational college, Rosemont unveiled a new College mascot, which will also serve as the face of Rosemont Athletics.Â
History of School Mascot
Before 1988, research does not indicate that Rosemont students formally adopted a mascot or team name, although the seniors of the Undergraduate College were referred to as "old gray mares." Until the 70s there was a tradition that an "Olde Gray Mare" costume was donned by two seniors selected to boost school spirit on special occasions. The costume has disappeared and so has the tradition. In 1988 the student body voted the ³Rosemonster² their mascot. The Rosemonster was known to make appearances on special days and at some athletic events.
In 2009, the College will retire "Rosie the Rosemonster," which has been the College's school mascot, separate from the athletic mascot, since 1988.
