NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC – The John Jay College Bulldogs (1-3) defeated the Rosemont Ravens (0-1) this afternoon b y a score of 16-7 (5 innings) in what was the opening game for the Rosemont softball team.
The Ravens showed good patience at the plate and scored in four of the five innings played. The Ravens grabbed a 4-3 lead after the second inning, but errors hurt them in the next two frames, as John Jay would score five in the 3rd and eight in the 4th to take a commanding 16-5 lead. Rosemont shut down the Bulldogs in the top of the 5th, and made some noise in the bottom of the inning, scoring a pair of runs, but the tallies were not enough to continue the game after five innings.
Dani Lelie was a spot starter for the Ravens and pitched well. Of the 16 runs given up by Rosemont only four were earned.
On offense, the Ravens scored in all but one inning, starting with a three-spot in the first. Gianna Pedone singled up the middle to score Taylor Mohr. Olivia Crenny drew a bases on balls to force home Dani Lelie. Then, Cassie Steiner grounded to shortstop who misplayed the ball allowing Pedone to score an unearned run to make the score 3-3.
In the second inning Jess Versage drew a walk with the bases loaded to score Taylor Mohr and put the Ravens up 4-3.
In the third, Lelie got another RBI for the Ravens, thanks to a bases-loaded walk to score Steiner.
In the last at-bat for the Ravens, Versage drew another bases-loaded walk to score Alyssa Foronda while Lelie scored on a wild pitch to account for Rosemont's last run.
Rosemont showed patience at the plate, drawing 11 walks against four strikeouts. All five Ravens hits came from the 3rd and 4th spots in the batting order as Lelie was 2-for-2 with two walks with two runs scored and an RBI. Gianna Pedone got her season off to a good start at the plate, hitting 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Jess Versage had two RBIs and she walked three times. Alyssa Foronda also walked three times in the game.
The Ravens come back to play in North Myrtle Beach tomorrow when they are scheduled to face Regis College at 9:30am and West Virginia State University at 11:30am.
