Ravens Take Season Finale Over Cairn

ROSEMONT, Pa. (Ravens Athletic Complex) – The Rosemont Ravens softball team ended their season on a high note, defeating the visiting Cairn University Highlanders today by a final score of 8-0 in the second game of today's CSAC doubleheader. The Ravens lost the first game today by a 4-3 score. Rosemont ends their season with an overall record of 5-20 (3-19 CSAC). Cairn ended their season with an overall record of 14-20 (2-20 CSAC).
 
Game 1 – Cairn 4, Rosemont 3
 
Two Rosemont errors in the first inning helped the Highlanders to open up with a 2-run first. Rosemont pitcher Autumn Sharkey would keep the Cairn bats under control for the next several innings until the cavalry came, which they did, in the bottom of the fourth inning. Lena Buccigrossi hit a 2-out RBI single to right to score Charli Fillmore to start the scoring for Rosemont. Melissa Lynch would later single to center to score Buccigrossi to tie the score at two runs apiece after four innings.
 
Cairn immediately struck back for a go-ahead run in the fifth inning. The run was unearned, but it gave the Highlanders the 3-2 lead. In the bottom of the fifth the Ravens scored to the the game when Bailey Schulte stole second base after getting on with a bunt single. An overthrow by the catcher on Schulte's steal attempt went into the outfield and Schulte cruised around the bases to knot the game.
 
The Ravens committed errors on the first two Cairn batters In the seventh inning . Rosemont limited the damage after a bad start to the inning, but a run came home on a Katelynn Reiss groundout to score Haley Tinney for what would eventually be the winning run, as the Ravens came up scoreless in the bottom of the frame.
 
Rosemont's Lora Zubrzycki and Lena Buccigrossi each went 2-for-3, with Buccigrossi scoring and knocking in an RBI. Melissa Lynch also had an RBI in the contest.
 
Autumn Sharkey took the loss, going all seven innings and giving up only two earned runs on nine Cairn hits. Sharkey struck out six and walked none.

For Cairn, Meagan Maratita, Angela Paskitti, and Jessica Rolo all went 2-for-4. Katelyn Reiss knocked in a pair of runs for the Highlanders. In the circle, Meaghan Maratita went the distance, giving up two earned runs on nine Rosemont hits, striking out five and not walking any batters.
 
Game 2 – Rosemont 8, Cairn 0 (5 innings)
 
The season finale was a totally different affair, as Rosemont pitcher Charli Fillmore kept Cairn under full control throughout the game, and the Ravens limited their errors, shutting out the Highlanders on three hits.
 
The Ravens started scoring early in this game, as Bailey Schulte would single to first base scoring Ke'alohilani Naone-Carter for the first run. With a runner aboard, rookie Kaileigh Whalen launched her fifth home run of the season to give the Ravens a 3-0 cushion after one inning.
 
Rosemont added on three more runs in the second inning. The scoring in the frame started when Naone-Carter would single to the left side to score Melissa Lynch. A sacrifice fly from Charli Fillmore would plate Naone-Carter. The Ravens would score on a strange play, when Whalen walked, but was thrown out at second base in an attempt to steal, but Schulte came home before the out was registered.
 
The Ravens tacked on a run in the fourth on a Cairn error, and another run in the 5th on a bases-loaded 3-2 count walk to Bailey Schulte, forcing home Abigail Wolfe for the winning run.
 
Every player but one got at least one safety for Rosemont. Abigail Wolfe and Melissa Lynch each had a pair of hits. Kaileigh Whalen drove in three runs, while Bailey Schulte knocked in a pair of runs. Lohi Naone-Carter and Charli Fillmore also had one RBI apiece.
 
Cairn was stymied in the nightcap by Charli Fillmore. In the circle she went five full innings, giving up three runs, striking out five and not walking any batters. Cairn's Meagan Maratita pitched an inning and ended up taking the loss for the Highlanders. She was relieved by Haley Tinney, who pitched the remaining 3.1 innings. Combined, the Cairn hurlers gave up seven earned runs on 10 Rosemont hits. They walked seven and no Rosemont players struck out in this contest.
 
This concludes the 2017 season for the Ravens. The program thanks their fans for supporting them this year, and looks forward to a successful season in 2018.
