HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. - After weeks of hard work in trying to get a program back on its feet, Rosemont's women's lacrosse team saw its efforts rewarded in a big way on Tuesday afternoon.
Maciana Mazzeo scored three times while
J'Nea Jenkins,
Emily Johnston and
Lauren Lightcap all added two goals apiece as the Ravens edged Centenary by a 9-7 margin in a Colonial States Athletic Conference contest played at J.E. Reeves Jr. Field in central New Jersey.
It is Rosemont's first win in women's lacrosse since a 12-10 victory over Cedar Crest on April 25, 2017. The program did not play during the 2018 season because of a personnel situation. It was also the first win of the head coaching career of
Shae Risley, who took over the program this season.
The Ravens exploded in the first 10 minutes of the second half, scoring four times within the first 9:30 of the session with Mazzeo scoring twice adding to goals by Jenkins and Johnston to grab an 8-4 lead. Â Lightcap would add her second goal of the game at the 17:04 mark to give the Ravens a 9-5 advantage.
Part of the key for the Ravens was the defensive effort. Centenary was held to just 17 shots for the contest, held a 36-19 advantage in ground balls and doubled up on draw controls with a 12-6 edge over the Cyclones. Rosemont also forced a season high of 35 turnovers.
The Ravens are back in action on Thursday afternoon when they will head back across to the Jersey side to face Rutgers-Camden in a non-conference matchup that will start at 4 p.m.
