DOYLESTOWN – The Rosemont women's basketball team (1-3) held the host Delaware Valley University Aggies (0-4) to 24.6% shooting from the field and 1-for-15 shooting from downtown, and leveraged rookie guard Ayanna Thompson's 24 points to score a 62-55 road win.
The Ravens took their first lead of the game midway through the first period when Brianna Macauley made a layup to put Rosemont ahead 4-2. In a low-scoring quarter, the Ravens wouldn't hit the scoreboard again until two minutes were left, holding on to a 6-4 lead. A layup by the Aggies with five ticks remaining put the home side up 10-9 at the short break.
DelVal opened up a 15-9 lead two minutes into the second quarter, but Rosemont would go on an 8-0 run to grab a 17-15 lead on an Ayannna Thompson jumper with 4:15 left in the half. The Ravens would hold off DelVal for the rest of the period and maintain a 23-20 lead at the half.
The two teams had difficulty separating themselves in the third period, and the Aggies re-took the lead 27-26 with 5:19 left in the third quarter. Behind 29-26 with 4:32 left in the period, free throws by Nadirah Anderson would give the Ravens a three-point cushion, 32-29, with 3 minutes left in the period. Rosemont would extend their lead to 41-33 at the next break.
The Ravens would open up their largest lead with 6:35 remaining in the game on a Brianna Macauley layup to put the Ravens ahead 51-37. Delaware Valley would get to within six points with 45 seconds left, but free throws from Macauley and Thompson down the stretch staunched the comeback attempt.
Ayanna Thompson shot 8-for-18 from the field and 4-for-11 from outside the arc, going 4-for-5 from the line to lead both teams with 24 points, a career high. Nadirah Anderson's 6-for-6 at the charity stripe accounted for half of her 12 points. Brianna Macauley also scored 12. Leilani Naone-Carter had eight rebounds to lead Rosemont.
DelVal's Brianna Rivello notched a double-double with 17 points and 10 boards. D. Skedzielewski (13) and Sam Foy (11) both scored in double-digits for the Aggies.
Next up for the Ravens will be their CSAC opener on the road in Baltimore when they face Notre Dame of Maryland University on Wednesday, 12/2. The game against the Gators is scheduled for a 7:00pm start.
