Big Inning Carries Ravens to Win Over Swarthmore

Rosemont, Pa. – A big 2nd inning for Rosemont (4-23) broke open a tie game and the Ravens held off the visiting Swarthmore Garnet (5-16) for a 6-3 win in a non-conference game.

After the Garnet opened up with a run in their half of the first inning the Ravens countered when Dani Lelie and Alyssa Foronda pulled off a double-steal, with Foronda plating the tying run to make it 1-1.

The Ravens batted around in their half of the second, scoring five runs. Jess Versage knocked in the first run with a single to center to score Taylor Mohr. Dani Lelie singled up the middle to knock in two runs as Foronda and Versage came home. Gianna Pedone ended the scoring in the inning with a sharp double to left, scoring Lelie and Lora Zubrzycki to make the score 6-1 after two innings were played.

Swarthmore changed pitchers to Frankie Ponziani to start the bottom of the 3rd inning, and the Ravens had trouble figuring out Ponziani, who held the Ravens to one base runner the rest of the way.

Meanwhile, Swarthmore started to chip away at Rosemont's 5-run lead, scoring a run on a sacrifice fly in the 4th to make the score 6-2. Rosemont starter Nikki Maurer started to face more trouble in the top of the 5th as an error and two singles loaded the bases with one out for the Garnet.

Rosemont Head Coach Erin Skinner asked Maurer turn the ball over to Maggie Miller to try to get out of the jam. Miller did an excellent job, getting a groundout and strikeout to end the threat with only one run scoring, and Rosemont still holding a 6-3 lead.

As Ponziani was dealing for Swarthmore, Miller gave up a 2-out single in the 6th, but no runs were scored. Going into the top of the 7th, Miller started the inning by issuing a walk, and then back-to-back Garnet singles to load the bases with no outs. After a meeting in the circle, the Ravens got down to business, retiring the next three batters on three fielder's choices, including two gunning down the runners attempting to score from 3rd base. Miller and the Ravens escaped the 7th inning jam, ceding no runs, and putting a game in the "Win" column.

Maurer pitched the first 4 1/3 innings and earned the win, giving up 3 runs (only 1 earned), with two strikeouts and a walk. Miller pitched the remaining 2 2/3 innings to earn a save, shutting out the Garnet with one walk and one strikeout.

Foronda, Lelie, and Mohr each garnered two hits for Rosemont. Lelie and Pedone each knocked in two for the Ravens.

Swarthmore's Sara Planhaber and Frankie Ponziani each went 3-for-4 at the plate, while Emma Madarasz, Emily Bowman, and Mary Olesnavich each had a couple of hits apiece.  Olesnavich took the loss, pitching two innings and giving up six earned runs.

The Ravens return to conference doubleheaders to end their season, starting with a double-dip on Friday against the Marywood Pacers at the Ravens Athletic Complex. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:00pm.
