ROSEMONT, Pa. – The Rosemont volleyball team showed some spark tonight, with solid contributions from their rookies and some good front-line play, but it wasn't enough to hold off the visiting Penn State –Brandywine Nittany Lions, as the Ravens lost 0-3 (11-25, 11-25, 15-25). The non-conference match was the first match of the season for both squads.
In the first match the Ravens took an early 2-1 lead, but the Nittany Lions would score the next five points to grab a 6-2 lead. The Ravens would mount a comeback to knot the set at 7-7, but the Nittany Lions would then put together a six-point streak to give themselves a comfortable lead.
The Ravens would open up the second set with a 1-0 lead, but PSU-Brandywine scored the next five points to take a 5-1 lead. Rosemont would earn some side-outs, but could not put together enough momentum to scratch back into the lead after that point.
The third set was the best for the Ravens. They lost 15-25, but the set featured a tremendous point by the team started with a dig by rookie Maria Athanasiadis. Using her feet to set the shot for the eventual Rosemont point was sensational. The Ravens would open up with a 3-1 lead, and still led 5-4. But the Nittany Lions would put together a costly five-point run to take a 9-5 lead. The Ravens would get to within three points at 10-13, but they were out-scored 12-5 the rest of the set.
Nadirah Anderson anchored the front line tonight getting credit for five kills. Rookie Sabrina Heggan had two service aces to lead for the Ravens. Sabrina Heggan had 10 assists and Anderson also did her work on the back line along with Leilani Carter to each lead Rosemont with five digs.
The Ravens will host a tri-match this coming Saturday. Rosemont will face Bryn Athyn College at 11am and New Jersey City University at 3pm in non-conference matches.
