How It Happened

The Ravens got off to a slow start in the first set, falling behind the Falcons 4-0, and trailed 11-4 before Head Coach Brian Phipps requested a time out. After the timeout the Ravens outscored Cedar Crest 7-1 to get to within a point of the host Falcons. But Cedar Crest would out-score Rosemont 8-3 to grab a 20-14 lead and would end up handing the Ravens a first set loss, 25-16.

In the second set the Ravens opened up a 5-2 lead, but the Falcons snapped back to tie the set at 6-6 and to extend their momentum to take the lead to 15-8. Rosemont battled back to trail by only two points, 23-21, but Cedar Crest held on for the 25-21 decision.

The third set was nip-and-tuck the entire time, with neither team earning more than a three-point advantage until late in the set when Cedar Crest led 21-16. The Ravens showed put together a tremendous comeback, outscoring the Falcons 9-0, punctuated by a service ace from Maria Athanasiadis for the set point to claim the win, 25-21.

The Ravens, now back in the match, needed to win the fourth set to get to a deciding fifth set. Mission accomplished! Tied 11-11 in the fourth set, the Ravens opened up an 18-13 lead and fended off the Falcons the rest of the way to take the set, 25-19.

The deciding fifth set was another nail-biter. Trailing 4-5 to Rosemont, Cedar Crest put together a 7-1 streak to gain a solid 11-6 lead. With the target being only 15 points, things looked bleak for the visiting Ravens, but they showed fight, outscoring the Falcons 8-3 to knot the set at 14 points apiece. Tied 15-15, Cedar Crest took advantage of a Rosemont attack error and a bad set to claim the deciding match, 17-15.
