Ravens End Campaign With Split at Cairn

LANGHORNE, Pa. - The Rosemont women's softball team (3-27, 3-19 CSAC) faced the Cairn Highlanders (1-31, 1-21 CSAC) today and the teams split the games with the Ravens winning the opener by a score of 12-3 (6 innings) and with the Highlanders winning the nightcap, 11-10.

Game 1

It took both teams to start their offenses, but the Ravens hit the scoreboard first when Brianna Macauley singled home Kaitlin Fracchiolla to put the Ravens ahead 1-0 in the 3rd inning. In the top of the fourth inning, the Ravens ramped up their offense by scoring eight runs on five hits as Rosemont sent 14 runners to the plate to plate eight runs to take a commanding 9-0 lead.

Cairn responded with a pair in the bottom of the fourth, and both teams scored a run in the fifth inning as the Ravens were ahead 10-3 after five innings. The Ravens put the game away for good in the sixth inning, scoring two runs; the first coming on a bases-loaded walk to Dani Lelie, followed by a Charlie Fillmore single to score Ciani Fleming-Evans.

Rosemont pitcher Nikki Maurer shut out the Highlanders in the bottom of the sixth to end the game with Rosemont ahead 12-3. Maurer gave up three runs (2 earned) on 11 hits, striking out four and walking only one.

Game 2

Trailing by two runs after two innings, the Ravens responded in the top of the 3rd inning to put a four-spot on the board. The runs came off three bases loaded walks with the bases loaded from Darby O'Rourke, Cassie Rehnert, and Ciani Fleming-Evans. Kayla Thompson singled for an RBI in the inning.

Leading 4-2 the Ravens continued their momentum in their top of the 4th inning by putting an additional four runs on the board. Leading 8-2, the Highlanders broke Rosemont's momentum by matching the Ravens' scoring in the inning, putting up four runs of their own to sneak back to within a pair with Rosemont ahead 8-6 after the 4th inning.

The Ravens were shut out in the 5th inning, but Cairn scored another big four runs in their half of the inning to re-take the lead, 10-8 after the 5th.

With the score still 10-8 going into the 7th inning, the Ravens put two runs on the board to tie the game, when Lora Zubrzycki singled home Nikki Maurer and Dani Lelie to tie the score at 10-10. Cairn would single home the winning run in the bottom of the inning to claim the 11-10 decision, their first win of the 2016 season.

Errors leading to unearned runs were key in the game. Rosemont pitcher Maggie Miller worked the first 5 innings of the game, and Nikki Maurer worked the remainder. Combined, the hurlers gave up 11 runs, but four were unearned. Cairn pitchers gave up 10 Rosemont runs of which eight were earned.

This doubleheader concluded Rosemont's 2016 season.
