Ravens Record-Setting Season Ends at Neumann

Kyle Lafferty Becomes 2nd in Program to Reach 1,000 Career Points

ASTON, Pa. (The Mirenda Center) – The Rosemont College men's basketball team's 2016-2017 campaign came to an end tonight at Neumann University's home court, 87-69, in the CSAC Championship Semifinal against the #1 seed, where the Knights are 13-0 this season. The Ravens end their season with a record-setting 16 wins, going 16-11 overall. The result tonight snapped Rosemont's five-game win streak. The Knights improved their record for the season to 24-2, and will host #3 seeded Gwynedd Mercy in the CSAC Championship game on Saturday afternoon.

Senior Kyle Lafferty scored 16 points tonight, ending his career scoring with two free throws with 2:35 remaining in the game to become the Rosemont men's basketball program's second player to reach 1,000 Rosemont points. Lafferty joins Justin Chaney, who scored 1,031 between 2009-2013.

The Ravens played Neumann to two overtimes in their games during the regular season, but the Ravens couldn't make up the deficit in tonight's game, before a packed house, including many Rosemont fans.  Though Rosemont never led in the contest, the game was certainly close in the first half with Rosemont trailing by only two points, 19-17, with 8:22 left. Over the next several minutes, though, the Ravens missed some key layups under pressure and Neumann put together a 10-2 run to get their first double-digit lead of the contest, with Rosemont trailing 29-19 with 3:39 left in the half. The Ravens managed to stay with the Knights and pull back a couple of points before the break, trailing 35-27 when the buzzer sounded.

The Ravens would trail by seven with 17:21 on the clock, 39-32, but the Knights began to pull away slowly as the game wore on. The Ravens found themselves trailing by 18 points, 59-41 with 11:27 on the clock. Rosemont had made some major comebacks against their opponents this season, but it would not happen tonight. Chopping the deficit to 13 points, 61-48, with just under 10 minutes left, Neumann would essentially put the game away over the next four minutes, outscoring the Ravens 6-0 to take a 67-48 lead.

When Head Coach Bob Hughes was asked about the difference between this game and the two regular-season games when the same two teams faced each other, "Neumann defended much, much better than they did in the previous two games, taking us out of what we wanted to do. We had a plan, and we just didn't follow the plan. Their pressure got to us, and we just stopped doing what we wanted to do, and that's when the game got out of hand. When the shots stopped falling, we started to think we needed to do things one-on-one, and make individual plays instead of team plays, and when you do that, bad stuff can happen against really good teams, and Neumann is a really good team."

Jamier Hughes scored 19 points (8-for-15 from the field) to lead the Ravens tonight, while Laffferty scored 16 and Clayton Wolfe added 14 points.

The Knights' Darian Barnes put 25 points on the board to lead all players in the game, while DeShawn Lowman (20), Tyaire Hudson (15), and Carl Wallace (14) scored in double-digits for Neumann. Wallace had 17 rebounds for a double-double.

The Ravens, under pressure from the nationally-ranked #15 team in the nation, were held to shooting 38% from the field, while Neumann shot 51%. The three-point buckets that Rosemont used to win the CSAC Quarterfinal game on Monday were harder to find tonight, as the Ravens hit on 6-for-21 (29%) from beyond the arc.

Rosemont was out-rebounded 44-33, while Neumann had a 17-7 advantage in assists.

The 16 overall wins and 13 conference wins set new marks for the program.
