Ravens Lose Season-Opener in Double OT

Koszelak Gets Hat Trick

The Basics

  • Final Score: Wesley 9, Rosemont 8 (2OT)
  • Records: Rosemont (0-1), Wesley (1-0)
  • Location: Dover, Del. (Miller Stadium)

How It Happened

The two teams played a tough brand of defense in the first quarter, allowing just one goal apiece. For Rosemont, Ben Koszelak scored off an assist from Anthony Bottoms to grab the 1-0 lead with just 1:18 elapsed. Just over six minutes later, Wesley's Zach Farnell answered to tie the score at 1-1, which was the score at the end of the quarter.

The Ravens put it all together in the 2nd quarter, shutting out the Wolverines 4-0 in the frame. The scoring didn't start until there was 6:32 left on the clock, but the Ravens pulled ahead 2-0 on a man-up goal from Anthony Bottoms (Bobby Fritz). From that point, the goals started to flow quickly out of the Rosemont crosses. With 5:14 on the clock, Ben Koszelak hit the net for his second goal of the game. Just 11 seconds later the Ravens took advantage of another man-up opportunity when Zach Bowe gave the Ravens a 4-1 lead. 1:23 later, Bowe hit for his 2nd straight to put Rosemont up 5-1 and ending the scoring for the half.

Turnabout is fair play, and the Wolverines answered in the 3rd quarter with a 4-0 shutout of Rosemont. Goals from four different Wesley players knotted the game at five apiece going into the 4th quarter.

The Ravens' offense snapped back with a goal from Tyler Ferrara (Anthony Bottoms) to re-take the lead, 6-5, with 10:21 left. Zach Bowe would then give Rosemont some insurance off of a feed from Bottoms to go ahead 7-5, just 30 seconds later. Wesley would respond with a goal with 6:52 left to get back to within 7-6 before Ben Koszelak would score his third of the game on a man-up situation (Brandon Krausse) to retain their two-goal lead, 8-6, with 5:28 on the clock. The Wolverines responded quickly, getting back to within 8-7 just 25 seconds later. The home side would tie the score on an unassisted goal from Zach Farnell with 1:17 on the clock to make the score 8-8, and that's where the score remained after regulation.

Although there were opportunities to score for both teams in the first overtime, neither team was able to cash in, leading to the second overtime. Just seconds after Wesley won the faceoff, Wesley's Leo Kelly (Joe Fingles) put Wesley ahead for the first time in the game, 9-8, and the game ended on that golden goal, handing the Ravens a close opening-day loss.
