How It Happened

The Rosemont Ravens men's lacrosse team battled the Colonials from Western Connecticut State this afternoon in a very close and entertaining game. After falling behind early, the Ravens forged ahead in the 2nd half. The visiting Colonials would tie the game in the final quarter, but a goal from the Ravens' Ben Koszelak with 33 seconds remaining would be the deciding score as the Ravens took the 10-9 decision.

Things looked bleak early in the contest for Rosemont when West Conn shut out the Rosemont offense in the first quarter, going into the first break with a 3-0 lead. Things turned a bit more worrisome for the home side when the Colonials added another goal with 13:48 left in the second quarter to take a 4-0 lead.

The Ravens would begin to ratchet themselves back into the contest just nine seconds later when Brandon Krausse scored his 6th goal of the season from Ben Koszelak to dent the scoreboard for Rosemont. 3:09 later in the quarter, Ben Koszelak would score his 20th of the season 3:09 later off of a pass from Josh Chiappetta to get the Ravens a bit closer to the Colonials, trailing 4-2 with 10:30 on the clock. Just 21 seconds later, Rosemont made it known that they would not go down easily this afternoon when Purnell Summers would score to get the Ravens to within a slim goal of the lead, trailing 4-3 with 10:09 left.

After this point the defenses took over and finally ceded a score when Rosemont gave up a goal to West Conn's Eric Caldwell to get the Colonials' lead back up to two goals, 5-3 with 3:57 left in the half. The Ravens would wrest away the lead in the last key 1:43 of the period when goals from Tyler Ferrara (Koszelak), Ben Koszelak (Fritz), and Purnell Summers would end the half with the Ravens taking their first lead of the contest, 6-5.

Summers would score again only 47 seconds into the second half, giving Rosemont a 7-5 lead. The teams would trade goals going into the final quarter, when Zach Bowe restored a two-goal (9-7) lead for Rosemont with 14:26 left in the 4th quarter. 3:38 later, the Colonials' John Foristall would edge the visitors closer, and 4:22 later, Christian Sparacino would score his first of the season to knot the game at 9-9.

It became apparent that the next goal would be huge. It was a waiting game to see which team would score, and when, as the clock wound down. A West Conn shot found the net, but was disallowed on a violation with time starting to get scarce, giving the ball to the Ravens. With 33 seconds left, Koszelak rippled the twine behind the Colonials' keeper to put the Ravens up 10-9. The next 20 seconds or so were spent in the West Conn offensive zone, but the Colonials were called for a penalty that ended the game for all intents and purposes, and the Ravens could go on to celebrate their third win of the season.

Ultimately, it was a big 2nd quarter offensive spurt that turned the tide in the game in Rosemont's favor. Western Connecticut won the first quarter 3-0, but Rosemont bounced back to win the second quarter by four goals (6-2). Each team scored a pair of goals in the 3rd and 4th quarters.
