Ravens Bats Heat Up, Split at Notre Dame

BALTIMORE, Md. (Coppin State Softball Complex) – The Ravens were hot at the plate in today's CSAC doubleheader, as the Ravens scored a total of 21 runs total, and rode a good outing from pitcher Autumn Sharkey in game one as Rosemont won the first game, 10-2, but lost the nightcap after a big Notre Dame comeback, 12-11.

With the results, the Ravens moved to 4-11 overall (2-10 CSAC). The Gators of Notre Dame moved to 4-15-1 overall (3-9 CSAC).

Game 1 – Rosemont 10, Notre Dame (Md.) 2

The Ravens jumped out early against the Gators' hurler Hanna Morseman, putting up a six-spot in the first inning, and riding a strong pitching effort from Autumn Sharkey to hold on to the win.

The first Rosemont runs were plated when Kaileigh Whalen doubled to knock in Bailey Schulte and Ke'alohilani Naone-Carter to put the Ravens ahead 2-0. Lena Buccigrossi then singled in a pair to score Whalen and Charli Fillmore. It was then Abigail Wolfe's turn to drive in a pair, which she did on a single, scoring Lora Zubrzycki and Buccigrossi. Rosemont took advantage of a couple of Gator errors as they put six runs on the board in the frame on five hits with two errors and two baserunners left.

The Gators would respond in their half of the first by plating a pair to give Rosemont a 6-2 lead after the first inning was completed.

Rosemont's bats continued to produce in the top of the 2nd inning. A Buccigrossi ground out to third would score Whalen. Later in the inning, Zubrzycki would reach on an error and Sharkey would come around from second to score on the play to put the Ravens ahead 8-2.

The scoring for the game would end in the Rosemont half of the 4th frame when Buccigrossi singled down the right field line to knock in Whalen. Finally, Melissa Lynch singled to center to score Buccigrossi.

Autumn Sharkey was in the circle for all five innings, surrendering two runs and three hits. She struck out three and walked only one batter.

Kaileigh Whalen led the Ravens at the plate, going 3-4 with 2 RBI, with a double and triple. Lena Buccigrossi also had a big game, going 2-3 and knocking in four runs.

Final Line

Rosemont 10 runs, 10 hits, 2 errors, 7 left on base
Notre Dame (Md.) 2 runs, 3 hits, 5 errors, 4 left on base

Win: Autumn Sharkey (3-6)
Loss: Hanna Morseman (3-5)

Game 2 – Notre Dame (Md.) 11, Rosemont 10

File this one as one that got away from the Ravens. Rosemont continued their hot-hitting form to open the game, as they put together a big eight-run first inning while starter Charli Fillmore shut down the Gators for the first three innings. Going to the bottom of the 4th, the Ravens held an 8-0 lead, but Notre Dame started to mount a comeback in the bottom of the inning when they put a four-spot on the board to slice Rosemont's lead to 8-4 after four innings.

Notre Dame's hurler Madison King settled down after the first inning to shut down the Ravens' hitters, holding Rosemont scoreless in the 2nd through 6th innings.

In the circle, Autumn Sharkey spelled Fillmore with two outs in the 6th and the Ravens still ahead 8-5, but the pitching change did little to keep the Gators from adding to their tally. In the inning, Notre Dame would go on to score seven runs on seven hits while stranding three, putting the Gators ahead 11-8 after six.

The Ravens, now trailing, showed no sign of giving up. An Abigail Wolfe double would score Melissa Lynch while a Kaileigh Whalen triple would score Charli Fillmore and Lohi Naoni-Carter to knot the score at 11-11 with the Gators due to bat in the 7th.

Notre Dame's Sydney Salgado would end the game when she would single home Lilly Gordon for the game-winning hit, and ending today's doubleheader with a split.

Lohi Naone-Carter, Bailey Schulte, Charli Fillmore, and Kaileigh Whalen each had a pair of safeties. Extra-base hits came off the bats of Whalen (triple), Naone-Carter (double), Sharkey (double), and Wolfe (double).

Final Line
Rosemont 11 runs, 13 hits, 2 errors, 9 left on base
Notre Dame (Md.) 12 runs, 14 hits, 6 errors, 6 left on base

Win: Madison King (1-7)
Loss: Autumn Sharkey (3-7)

The Ravens will go on break, but return to CSAC action on Tuesday, 4/18 when they travel to play the Immaculata Mighty Macs. The first game of the doubleheader is scheduled for a 3:00pm start.
