RADNOR, Pa. -- In the end, the spirit was willing. But the opponent proved once again to be too strong to overcome.
Rosemont's men's basketball team put up a good fight, but Cabrini showed why it is likely on its way back to the NCAA Tournament regardless of what happens in the rest of the Colonial States Athletic Conference tournament.
The Cavaliers shot 60 percent from the floor in the second half, forced 20 Ravens turnovers and advanced to the CSAC's championship game with a 91-72 win Wednesday night in a semifinal contest at Nerney Field House.
Cabrini will play Neumann, who went on the road and shocked Gwynedd Mercy by a 102-85 margin Wednesday night in the other semifinals. The two teams will meet Saturday afternoon at Nerney Field House for the CSAC title and the automatic berth in the NCAA Division III tournament. It is possible that Cabrini- now 23-3 and ranked tops in the regional rankings- could end up getting in regardless of the results.
The Ravens season ended with a 17-10 record and a third straight trip to the semifinals.Â
Rosemont did jump out quick, going up by 13 midway through the first half thanks to some incredible shooting from the outside. It looked like a carbon copy of what the Ravens had done in the previous two games against Keystone in the regular season finale and Marywood during Monday night's CSAC quarterfinals.
But Cabrini started warming up from the floor and clamped down on good looks by the Ravens offense. Tyheim Monroe- the CSAC's Player of the Year- and Deryl Bagwell would start to cut to the basket and Rosemont really seemed to have no answers on how to stop them. In the final 10 minutes of the first half, the Cavaliers outscored Rosemont by a 27-8 margin to grab a 38-29 intermission cushion that felt a lot steeper to climb.
The Cavs made it feel that way by putting up 53 points in the second half, while holding Rosemont to just 29 percent from beyond the 3-point line.
Charles Presley scored 15 points in his final game as a Raven, tying
Jalil Myers for top honors on the Ravens.
Mekhi Clemons scored 14 while
Jacob Simonson added 10 off the bench.
Monroe had 22, Bagwell had 19 and Anthony Wright-Downing had 12 for the Cavaliers.
