ROSEMONT –In their first contest of 2015 the Rosemont women's basketball team shook off three weeks of rust since their last game of 2014 to claim a win against the visiting Scarlet Raptors of Rutgers University-Camden tonight in a non-conference game, 64-51. The Ravens improved to 3-7 overall while the Scarlet Raptors had their three-game winning streak stopped, falling to 4-8.
The two teams tangled in a closely-played first half. The half figured seven ties and six lead changes. The Ravens held the largest lead of 23-18 with 1:37 left in the half, but Rutgers-Camden outscored Rosemont 10-2 down the stretch to grab a three-point lead, 38-25 at the break.
The Scarlet Raptors held a 30-29 lead with 16:00 left in the game, and that would be their last time in front as the Ravens put together an 18-2 run over the next seven minutes to grab a 47-32 lead with 9:03 left in the game. Rutgers-Camden attempted a rally but couldn't get closer than within seven points of the Ravens, 54-47 with 4:14 left in the contest. Rosemont ran out the rest of the game outscoring the Scarlet Raptors 10-4 to account for the final score.
Rutgers-Camden came into the game averaging close to three treys per game, but the Ravens held their long-distance shooting in check, as the Raptors were 0-7 from beyond the arc. Overall from the field, the Raven's defense held Rutgers' overall shooting to only 24%, significantly below their 39% from the field leading up to tonight's game.
Liz Coyne notched her 5th double-double of the season, scoring 12 points and pulling down 10 rebounds for the Ravens. Kierra Smith shot 6-for-12 from the field for 12 points to be the co-leader for the Ravens. Dominique Sellers and Olivia Crenny (5-for-6 from the field) both played well, scoring 10 points apiece. Crenny scored eight with five boards and three assists in the second half. Leilani Naone-Carter grabbed 10 caroms to tie for the lead for Rosemont.
For Rutgers-Camden, Michelle Obasi had a strong outing, scoring 16 points with 15 rebounds for a double-double. Teammate Alex Gravinese scored 11 in support.
The Ravens hope to build on their success when they next play on Wednesday when the team will travel to Immaculata for a CSAC game scheduled for a 6:00pm start.
