ROSEMONT - The Rosemont women's volleyball team swept Cairn University tonight, 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-22) and snapped an eight-game winning streak by the Highlanders against the Ravens. It was the second conference win for the Ravens this season. The last time the Ravens won at least two conference games in a season was in 2011. With the result the Ravens are now 2-21 (2-9 CSAC), while Cairn moved to 0-20 (0-11 CSAC).
In the first set, after falling behind 5-3, Rosemont rebounded for seven straight points, and 11 of the next 12 to take the 14-6 lead, and held off the Highlanders for the rest of the set.
Falling behind 5-4 in the second set the Ravens put together another streak, outscoring Cairn 8-1 to grab a 12-6 lead. The Ravens again would keep Cairn at bay to take the set.
In the decisive third set the Ravens stormed out to a 10-0 lead on Sabrina Heggan's serve, but the Highlanders wouldn't go away easily, eventually tying the score 17-17. Rosemont would slowly start to pull away to take a 23-19 lead, but Cairn would win the next couple of points to make it a very close 23-21. The teams traded points the rest of the way, and a bad set by Cairn represented the match point for Rosemont.
Morgan Rollins had 10 kills and 21 attacks in the match. Leilani Carter led the Ravens with eight service aces. Sabrina Heggan had five aces with 19 assists. Maria Athenasiadis led Rosemont with six digs.
The Ravens wind down their season on Saturday at Alumnae Hall when Hood College and The City College of New York (CCNY) play in a tri-match. Rosemont will face Hood at 11am and CCNY at 3pm.
