ROSEMONT, Pa. – The Rosemont College volleyball team absorbed a 3-1 loss to the visiting Griffins of Gwynedd Mercy University this morning in Alumnae Hall in what was a closely played match. With the result, the Ravens moved to an overall record of 1-12 (1-3 CSAC) and Gwynedd Mercy improved to 7-11 (4-1 CSAC).
The match started well for the Ravens in the first set when the home side won the first five points on Sabrina Heggan's serve, but the Griffins struck back with a side-out and six points on Laura Kirk's serve to grab back the lead, 7-5. The Ravens fought back to go ahead 8-7, and then trailed 8-10. Rosemont re-tied the score at 13-13, but GMU put together a streak of six straight to take a commanding 19-13 lead. Rosemont would not quit, getting back to within 21-19, but the Griffins eventually sealed the first set win, 25-20.
In the second set, the Ravens took command after falling behind 0-4. Trailing 3-5, Rosemont strung together eight straight points to grab an 11-5 lead. Ahead 11-6, Rosemont would put more distance from the Griffins by winning the next five straight to take a 16-6 lead. The Ravens held off the visitors for the rest of the set to win convincingly, 25-14.
The Ravens continued their momentum to open the third set, opening out to a 6-0 lead. But three and four-point streaks by GMU would give the Griffins the lead at 10-8. The Griffins stretched their lead to 16-10 and won the game 25-13.
Rosemont opened the fourth set with a 3-2 lead, before Rachael Hall of GMU would lead her team to seven straight points after a side-out to open up an 11-3 lead, and ultimately win the final set, 25-15.
The Ravens had 10 blocks in the game, with Nadirah Anderson having two solo blocks and six assisted blocks. Morgan Rollins led the team with 11 digs while Leilani Carter had eight. Sabrina Heggan added 23 assists to her season total.
The Ravens take the short trip to Cabrini on Tuesday, 10/6 for a CSAC volleyball tri-match. The Ravens will face Marywood at 7pm and host Cabrini at 9pm.
