Pioneers Down Ravens In Tournament Opener

WILLIAMSPORT – The Rosemont Ravens Women's basketball team suffered another tough loss tonight as they fell to the William Paterson Pioneers 72-64 in the first round of the Hoops for Hounds Tournament at Lycoming College. With the defeat the Ravens drop to 1-8, while the Pioneers improve to 6-5.

For the first 6:34 of the game the two teams played an even game. A free throw from William Paterson's Nikole Williams tied the game at 12. For the remainder of the quarter the Ravens made their presence known as they ended on a 14-0 run to lead 26-12 after one.

The Pioneers came out on fire to start the second as they used a 10-0 run of their own to close the score to 26-22. Jasmyn Parker would knock down a jumper and then Ayanna Thompson stuck a three, jumping the Ravens lead back up to nine at 31-22 with 5:18 left. William Paterson picked up the next seven in a row making it 31-29. Four straight points for Ke'alohilani Naone-Carter put Rosemont back ahead by six. However, the Pioneers closed on a 10-0 run to take a 39-35 lead at half.

The third quarter saw William Paterson start on a 6-0 run to take the lead to 10. A basket by the Pioneers' Williams gave them their largest lead of the night up to that point at 55-43 with 4:06 left. The Ravens went on a 11-5 run to end the quarter trailing it 60-54.

In the final frame, the Pioneers opened on a lengthy run of 10-2 to make it 70-56. Over the final 3:44 the Ravens would outscore William Paterson 8-2, but it was not enough as the game ended 72-64 in favor of the Pioneers.

Shirle Brown once again led Rosemont with a double-double posting 15 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Ke'alohilani Naone-Carter was the other Raven in double figures with 16 points. Sister Leilani Naone-Carter added 11 rebounds and chipped in with seven points.

The stats of the game were the Pioneers making 31 shots from the floor, while the Ravens made 23. Neither team shot well from behind the 3-point line. Rosemont was 3-15 with William Paterson going 1-16.   

Rosemont is right back at it tomorrow in the consolation game of the Hoops 4 Hounds Tournament as they will battle the Hiram College Terriers.  Tipoff is scheduled for 12pm at Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pa.
