Cold Shooting Costs Ravens

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (Lycoming College, Lamade Gym) – The Rosemont Ravens men's basketball team (4-7 overall) were defeated by the Fredonia College Blue Devils, 79-71 in the Louis Fleming Basinger Memorial Tournament consolation game played at Lycoming College. With the result the Blue Devils now also have a record of 4-7 for the season.

For the third straight game, the Ravens tried to earn a victory after falling behind late in the second half.

The first 10 minutes of play were especially tight. Both teams had a taste of the lead, but the Blue Devils got up in front by five points, the largest lead of the game by either team, with 9:48 left in the half. A three-pointer by Fredonia expanded the Blue Devil lead to seven points, 23-16 with 9:02 on the clock. Trailing 25-20 with 8:22 left, the Ravens worked hard to outscore Fredonia 9-0 to retake the lead, 29-25 with 6:11 showing. It would be Rosemont's largest lead of the game.

Both defenses held tight over the next several minutes as the Blue Devils snuck back up to re-tie the game at 29-29 with under four minutes left. With the Ravens still ahead 33-31 and 2:22 left in the half, Fredonia outpointed the Ravens 4-1, ending the half in the lead, 35-34.

In the second half, the Ravens hung close with the Blue Devils, but could not find a way to get back in front. A layup from A.J. Michaels tied the game at 39 apiece with 15 minutes left, but Fredonia stayed that one step ahead of the Ravens the rest of the way. With the clock starting to become a factor, a couple of free throws from Fredonia's Ian Helps put the Ravens behind by nine points, 56-47 with 6:38 to go.

A Jamier Hughes layup with 4:42 on the clock got the Ravens back to within four, 57-53 with 4:42 left, but a pair of treys from Fredonia gave the Blue Devils their first double-digit lead of the day, 63-53 with 4:07 remaining. With Rosemont still trailing by 10, the Ravens put together another comeback effort, but it fell short. A Nick Gemmell three-ball trimmed the deficit to seven points. A Jamier Hughes three-point play reduced the lead to six points, and a Charles Presley layup got the Ravens to within four points, 71-67 with 1:40 left. That's as close as Rosemont would get this afternoon, as Fredonia outscored the Ravens 8-4 down the stretch.

The Ravens shot only 31.5% from the field today compared to Fredonia's 44.4%, and Rosemont was out-rebounded by a count of 53-37.
