Ravens Defeat Mighty Macs in Return to Conference Play

Ravens Hang On Down the Stretch to Improve to 3-2 in the CSAC

ROSEMONT (Alumnae Hall) – The Rosemont Ravens defeated the visiting Immaculata Mighty Macs tonight by a final score of 87-83 to move their record to 5-7 overall (3-2 CSAC). Immaculata fell to 4-7 (2-2 CSAC).

The Ravens, coming off of two tough losses at Lycoming over the Christmas break, and Immaculata, who snapped a three-game losing streak on 12/30 by defeating Colby Sawyer played a close and entertaining game tonight. Neither team was able to put double-digits of distance from the other, and down the stretch it was the Ravens who made the plays when it counted to claim the win.

At the outset, the Ravens struggled to find their way to the front, trailing Immaculata by five points a couple of times in the first 6 ½ minutes. Rosemont was able to battle back to tie the score at 21-21, the third tie of the contest, with 8:56 left in the half thanks to a couple of free throws from Jamier Hughes. Trailing 21-17 with 10:09 left in the half, the Ravens put together a 6-0 run to go in front for the first time, 23-21 with 8:17 left in the period. Rosemont wouldn't trail over the last eight minutes of the half, but the Mighty Macs hung tough with neither team gaining more than a five-point advantage, with Rosemont ahead 39-34 with 1:15 before the break. Ultimately, Rosemont held on to a four-point lead, 41-37 after an Andrew Michaels bucket with six seconds on the clock to end the scoring in the half.

Clayton Wolfe buried a trey and another jumper to start the second stanza to give Rosemont what would be their largest lead of the game, nine points, with a long way to go. Still ahead by nine with 17 minutes left, the Mighty Macs would narrow the gap to only four points, 55-51 with 13:53 left. The Ravens dug in and clung to a slim lead midway through the half, ahead 60-59, until a basket by Immaculata's Michael Griffin gave Immaculata the one-point edge with 9:20 remaining.

An Andrew Michaels bucket would put Rosemont back up by a point, but the two teams battled to keep it close. With 7:38 left in the half, a couple of free throws from the Mighty Macs' Eric Pittman would give the visitors a 70-68 lead with 7:38 remaining. A three-pointer from Clayton Wolfe almost a minute later would wrest back a 71-70 lead for the Ravens. It was a lead that Rosemont would be challenged down the stretch, but never relinquish. A Jamier Hughes layup with 4:23 left would give the Ravens a small amount of breathing room, ahead 79-74, but with 4:23 on the clock there was plenty of basketball to be played.

A couple of Immaculata free throws and a bucket by Roy Ferrell would get the Mighty Macs back to within a point of the Ravens, leading 79-78 with 3:41 left, when Khai Roberts was fouled and he sank both charity tosses to put Rosemont back in front by three with 3:21 left. With the Ravens in possession with the three-point lead, Jamier Hughes had a key offensive rebound off of a miss and layed it up-and-in to give the Ravens an 83-78 lead with just under three minutes left.

Too much time left, as it turned out, as a trey and a bucket from Immaculata's Mike PIekarski would tie the game for the 8th time, 83-83, with 1:40 remaining. A Khai Roberts bucket 18 seconds later would put the Ravens back in front by a pair when Immaculata missed two shots on their next possession and Hughes getting a key offensive rebound for Rosemont. The Ravens came up empty on their possession, with the ball coming back to Immaculata with a two-point lead and only 31 seconds left on the clock. The Mighty Macs struggled for a good shot on their possession, ultimately missing on a three-pointer, when Clayton Wolfe grabbed the defensive rebound, was fouled, and sank two clutch free throws with only 6.9 seconds remaining, giving the Ravens a two-possession lead and finishing the game with a four-point victory for the home side.

From start to finish, Jamier Hughes looked like a man on a mission, and it showed up in the stat sheet as he shot 10-for-17 from the field, a perfect 6-for-6 from the line (26 points), and grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds (7 offensive boards) for  a strong double-double, his sixth of this season. Hughes was helped by Clayton Wolfe who shot 6-for-10 from the field, including 4-for-5 from downtown and a perfect 4-for-4 from the line to tally 20 points. He also was credited with five assists on the night. Andrew Michaels shot 5-for-6 from inside to score 10 points. Kyle Lafferty also dished five assists, with Charles Presley assisting on four buckets and getting three steals.

For Immaculata, the Mighty Macs were led in scoring by Mike Piekarski, who shot 6-of-9, including 3-of-5 from outside the arc for 19 points. Eric Pittman also added 19, Roy Ferrell hit on 7-for-10 for 15 points, and Matt Simon scored 13.

The Ravens took advantage of their opportunities from the foul line, hitting on 21-of-24 from the line (87.5%) compared to Immaculata's 15-19 (78.9%). Rosemont also controlled the boards, notching 38 rebounds compared to 29 for the Mighty Macs.

The Ravens next hit the Pennsylvania Turnpike to face Clarks Summit on Saturday, 1/7. The game will be the second of a doubleheader against the Defenders, with the women slated for a 1pm start and the men for a 3pm start.
