Ravens Fight Early But Pacers Just Too Much In The Second Half

SCRANTON – The Rosemont Ravens Women's basketball team fought hard for the first half of tonight's contest at Marywood University, but the Ravens lack of depth showed after halftime when they were outscored 34-18 over the final 20 minutes to fall by a final of 73-51. The loss drops Rosemont to 2-11 (1-4 CSAC), while the win improves the Pacers to 8-6 (4-1 CSAC).

The game started out with a familiar story line for Rosemont unfortunately. As Marywood opened on a 4-0 run. Shirle Brown got the Ravens first basket of the game and sparked a 7-0 sprint moving them ahead 7-4. A jump shot by the Pacers Alyssa Olson started a 7-0 run to pull Marywood in front 14-9 with 4:22 left. Baskets by Brown and Leilani Naone-Carter in a 13 second span got Rosemont back to within one at 13-14. A layup by Naone-Carter with a half minute to go closed out the scoring in the first with the Ravens down 19-17.

Marywood came out strong to open the second and used a 8-2 run over the first 2:22 to push their lead up to 8 at 27-19. The rest of the quarter saw the two teams go back and forth with neither team able to really assert themselves. A 3-pointer by Ayanna Thompson got the Ravens the closest they would be the rest of the half at 37-33. Olson capped off the scoring hitting a jump shot at the end of the frame making the score 39-33 heading to the locker room.

Coming out of the halftime break the Pacers went on a 4-0 run getting the lead to 10 points (43-33) with still 8:38 left in the third. A pair of free throws from Ke'alohilani Naone-Carter stemmed the tide for a moment closing the gap back to eight at 43-35. Catie Nealon's layup with 1:26 to go made the Marywood lead 55-39. The two sides spilt the final eight points ending the quarter at 59-43 Pacers.

The start of the fourth saw a familiar seen as Marywood opened on a 9-3 run taking the score to 68-46. The Pacers Lisa Steakin hit a three to get the largest lead of the night at 23 (71-48) with 2:25 left. Nia Reed and Kiley Stevens picked up the final three points of the evening for the Ravens. As the final buzzer sounded Rosemont would leave the floor to the tune of a 73-51 defeat.

Rosemont was led by two Naone-Carter sisters. Junior Leilani finished with 11 points and 8 rebounds; Freshman Ke'alohilani added 11 points while grabbing 6 rebounds. Shirle Brown also contributed 9 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals and dished out team high 4 assists.

The Pacers were paced by Jordan Barth who came off the bench to post a double-double with 16 points and pulled down 12 rebounds (8 on the offensive end). Natasha Hessling was the other player in double figures netting a game leading 17.

Marywood held a decisive edge on the glass 52-39. That led to them outscoring the Ravens 46-22 in the paint. Rosemont had a cold night from the floor shooting 19-70 (27.1%), while the Pacers were 31-69 (44.9%). The lack of Ravens depth was seen once again as they were outscored off the bench 28-10.

Rosemont will return home on Saturday afternoon when they host Gwynedd Mercy at Alumnae Hall. Tip between the Griffins and Ravens will be at 1pm. With the men to follow at 3pm.
