Ravens Drop Conference Home Game To Griffins

ROSEMONT – The Rosemont Ravens Women's basketball team led the visiting Gwynedd Mercy University Griffins this afternoon after one quarter 20-18. Unfortunately, the Griffins asserted themselves the rest of the way en route to a 88-68 victory over the Ravens at Alumnae Hall. With the defeat Rosemont falls to 2-13 (1-6 CSAC), while Gwynedd Mercy goes to 8-8 (6-1 CSAC).

The Griffins opened up the game on a 11-4 run over the first 4:58 finished off by a Nicole Dombrowski layup. Ayanna Thompson and Shirle Brown combined for a 5-0 push pulling the Ravens to within a pair, 11-9. The same combo went on another 5-0 run to bring the Gwynedd lead back to 16-14 with 3:04 left. A layup by Dombrowski seemed to spark Rosemont as they wrapped up the frame on a 6-2 run to lead 20-18.

Starting the second, the two teams continued to stay close to one another. A layup by Jasmyn Parker gave the Ravens a five-point lead at 27-22 3:09 into the period. Monet McGorda's jump shot with 6:33 to go sent the Griffins on a 24-7 run over the remainder of the half giving Gwynedd a 46-34 lead heading to the locker room.

In the third quarter both teams went basket-for-basket with the Griffins still holding a 12-point lead at 64-52 at the end of it.

The final stanza saw Gwynedd go on a 7-2 sprint right out of the gate to build the lead to 17 with 7:46 left. A layup Charlotte Kucowski gave the Griffins their largest lead of the night at 22 at 84-62 7:38 into the quarter. The Ravens Ke'alohilani Naone-Carter hit a three and Jasmyn Parker stroked a couple of foul shots to close out the Rosemont scoring. Bianca Adams layup with 11 seconds left finished the points for the day as Gwynedd Mercy left the gym with a 88-68 win.

The Ravens were led by point guard Ayanna Thompson who played every minute of the game, while adding 14 points, 3 assists and 2 steals. Her backcourt teammates Shirle Brown and Jasmyn Parker each hit double figures. As Brown netted a team-high 18. Parker chipped in with 17.

Gwynedd Mercy had five players hit double figures, including four of five starters. Charlotte Kucowski and Nicole Dombrowski each posted a double-double. Kucowski led the way with a game high 26 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. Dombrowski added 18 points and 10 rebounds. Julianna Hoisington (15), Bianca Adams (13) and Chyanne Fine (10) were the other Griffins in double digits.

The Ravens lack of height was a big factor today as Gwynedd Mercy held a decisive 51-28 lead on the glass. That led to 26 second chance points, while Rosemont only got 8. Dominance in the paint was also a big difference as the Griffins outscored the Ravens 44-12.

Rosemont will try to get back to their winning ways as they travel to Neumann University in Aston on Wednesday. Tip-off between the Ravens and Knights will be at 6pm, with the Men to follow at 8pm.
