Ravens Pull Away to Defeat Giants

CJ Wolfe Earns 4th Double-Double with 20 points, 10 assists

LA PLUME, Pa. (Gambal Athletic Center) – The Rosemont men's basketball team earned a much-needed victory in Northeast Pennsylvania today as they defeated the host Keystone College Giants by a final score of 98-89. With the result, the Ravens improved to 8-9 overall (6-4 CSAC), while the Giants fell to 5-11 (2-8 CSAC).

After falling behind early, 4-0, the Ravens recovered to outscore Keystone 14-2 to grab a 14-6 lead just four minutes in. Still ahead by six points, the home Giants would rally with a six-point run to knot the game at 18-18, for the first of nine ties in the game. A trey from Kyle Lafferty would get the Ravens' beaks back in front, but Keystone rebounded with another run, this one five points, to re-take the lead, 23-21 with eight minutes on the clock. The teams would remain close for the next few minutes. With 5:47 left in the half, Rosemont would start a rally that would out-score Keystone 13-3 to give them their largest lead of the contest, 40-31, with 2:17 left before the break. The Giants whittled the Rosemont lead down to six points as the Ravens went into halftime with a 45-39 advantage.

A Kyle Lafferty jumper opened the scoring in the second half positively for Rosemont on the first shot out of the gate, but the Giants responded with a big 18-4 advantage over the next four minutes to re-grab what would be their largest lead of the contest, 57-51 with 15:21 remaining. That lead would disappear just 1:26 later when Jamier Hughes converted a three-point play, followed by three-balls from Lafferty and Khai Roberts and a layup from Jamier Hughes put the Ravens back in front, 62-61 with 13 ½ left.

Over the next nine minutes, the teams would stay within close range of each other. A Clayton Wolfe layup with 4:08 left tied the game for the 9th time, 82-82. Wolfe followed that with another conversion from downtown, and a Hughes layup to grab a tentative five-point lead with 2:49 on the clock. Keystone would foul Rosemont down the stretch and would get back to within four points, with Rosemont ahead 93-89 with 1:06 left, but a Roberts three-ball and two converted free throws from Alex Epps-Ortiz salted way the game with neither team scoring in the final 35 seconds.

Wolfe scored his fourth double-double of the season with 20 points and a big 10 assists. Jamier Hughes had another solid game for the Ravens, scoring 20 points and leading the team with eight rebounds. Kyle Lafferty shot 7-for-10 (4-for-5 from downtown) on his way to scoring 18 points, while Alex Epps-Ortiz hit double-digits for the third time this season with 10 points.

The Giants were led by Perry Belcher, who was a perfect 9-for-9 from the field for 23 points. Mark Gilliam added 21, with 12 of those points coming from beyond the arc. John Kirkpatrick hit on 8-for-12 to put 17 points on the board for Keystone, while ShaShawn Drayton reeled in 10 boards.

The Ravens' quick hands helped cause 19 Keystone turnovers, while Rosemont committed a total of nine. The Ravens outscored the Giants in points off of turnovers with a difference of 30-13.

Next up for Rosemont will be a meeting with the Cairn Highlanders at home in Alumnae Hall on Wednesday, 1/25. The game is set to begin at 8pm, and will be the second half of a doubleheader with the women's game beginning at 6:00pm.
