Ravens Earn One-Point Win Over Cavaliers on Ravens Rally Night

Ravens Reach Post-Season for 4th Straight Season

ROSEMONT, Pa. (Alumnae Hall) – The Rosemont men's basketball team kept the Cabrini Cavaliers off the scoreboard and scored the final five points over the last 51 seconds tonight to defeat the Cabrini University Cavaliers 79-78 in a key CSAC game on Ravens Rally Night. The Ravens improved to a record of 11-9 overall (9-4 CSAC) while pinning the second conference loss of the season on the Cavs (15-5, 11-2 CSAC). The fourth straight win for Rosemont also solidified a berth for the Ravens in the CSAC Postseason tournament.

Cabrini opened up with a 5-0 lead after just over a minute was played, but the Ravens roared back with an 11-point run to grab an 11-5 lead after 4 ½ minutes were played. The Cavs answered with another run, this one eight points, to re-take the lead, 13-11 with 11:08 left on the clock. In a first half of several runs, the Ravens hatched another big 11-0 streak to take a 22-13 lead with 7:15 left in the half. The teams would play evenly through most of the rest of the half, with Cabrini coming to as close as six points of Rosemont, but the Ravens fended them off to end the first stanza with a lead of 41-30.

In the half the Ravens outshot the Cavaliers all over the floor, with a 52% to 41% advantage from the field, 33% to 18% from downtown and 67% to 33% (4-for-12) from the charity stripe.

Cabrini came out of the gate in the second half looking to prove something, outscoring the Ravens 8-1 to sneak back to within only four points, 42-38 with only just over a minute played. Cabrini got to within one point of catching the Ravens with 16 ½ minutes left, with Rosemont ahead 45-44 before Rosemont put together another key run of 11 straight points to pull ahead 56-44 with 13:15 remaining. Still ahead 59-51, Cabrini applied more pressure and managed to keep the Ravens off of the board to assemble a big 12-point run to grab a four-point lead, 63-59 with 7 ½ minutes remaining.

Consecutive layups from Kyle Lafferty and Clayton Wolfe re-tied the game at 63-63 with 6 ½ minutes left. The teams traded buckets for the next few minutes, but with Cabrini trailing 70-69, the visitors scored the next six straight to grab a more secure five-point cushion, 75-70 with 3:10 left. A Wolfe free throw punctuated by a Khai Roberts trey to pull the Ravens back to within a single point, trailing 75-74 with 2 minutes on the clock. A Cavalier bucket from Ryan Charity plus a free throw conversion by Devahnte Mosley put the Cavaliers back in front by four, but with 45 ticks left on the clock Charles Presley made a key shot from beyond the arc to narrow the Rosemont deficit to a point, trailing 78-77.

The Ravens forced a turnover, and a steal by Wolfe set up a Kyle Lafferty layup that put the Ravens back in front 79-78 with 16 seconds remaining. On Cabrini's next possession, Khai Roberts stole the ball and the Ravens were fouled. Missing two free throws left the Ravens ahead by the slimmest of margins, but a long shot at the bucket by Cabrini's Tyheim Monroe went off target and the Rosemont celebration began.

Clayton Wolfe led the Ravens offensively, hitting on 7-of-14 from the field for 20 points overall, while credited with a team-leading five assists. Khai Roberts scored 13 points and Charles Presley added 12 for Rosemont. Jamier Hughes was key in the post, leading Rosemont with eight boards.

On the Cabrini side of the ledger, Tyheim Monroe scored 21 points and added 17 rebounds for a double-double. Ryan Charity hit on 8-for-10 from the field totaling 18 points. DeVahnte Mosley (14 points, 5-for-7 from the field) and Keith Blassingale (3-for-4 from downtown) put 11 points on the scoreboard for the Cavs.

One deciding factor in the game unfolded in the first half, when Cabrini shot only 4-for-12 from the charity stripe, while the Ravens hit on 10-of-15. Overall, the Ravens hit on 16/27 from the foul line (59.3%) compared to Cabrini's 11/25 (44%). Rosemont outscored the Cavaliers in points off of turnovers, 27 to 18, and in fast-break points, 10 to 4.

The schedule gets no easier for the Ravens in the coming week. Next up for Rosemont is a game at Gwynedd Mercy on Saturday afternoon, followed up by a game against nationally-ranked Neumann back here at Alumnae Hall on Wednesday evening.
