Ravens Lose Close One To Griffins

GWYNNED VALLEY, Pa. (Griffin Complex) – The Rosemont men's basketball team gave another CSAC team all they could handle this afternoon, but this time the magic ran out for the Ravens down the stretch as the host Griffins held on to an 87-84 win over Rosemont. The Ravens had their four-game winning streak snapped and are now 11-10 overall (9-5 CSAC). Gwynedd Mercy moved up to a 17-4 overall record (11-3 CSAC).

Early in the contest, a Jamier Hughes free throw gave the Ravens their largest lead of the game, 13-7 with 13:42 left in the half, but the Griffins responded with a 15-2 run to grab a seven point lead, 22-15 with eight minutes remaining before the break. Two more conversions at the charity stripe from Hughes and a Kyle Lafferty layup would get the Ravens back to within 22-20, but this time Gwynedd responded with an 8-0 run to give the Griffins their largest lead of the game, 30-20 with 4:36 remaining in the half. Unfazed, the Ravens would knot the game with a 12-2 stretch, ending with a Charles Presley triple to pull the Ravens even with the Griffins, 32-32 with two minutes left. The teams would duel in the remaining time, with Gwynedd Mercy clinging to a one-point lead at the break, 39-38.

The Ravens got off to a slow start in the 2nd half, outscored 7-0 in the first three minutes to put the Griffins ahead 46-38. The Ravens refused to go away, when with 14:22 left in the contest, Jamier Hughes scored on a stuff to end a 10-4 Rosemont advantage to get the Ravens back to within a pair, trailing 50-48. The teams played evenly over the next several minutes with neither team able to open up against the other. A Lafferty free throw got the Ravens back to within 60-59 with 9:10 left. Each time Rosemont got close to the lead, the Griffins seemed to have an answer to just stay in front.

With 1:17 left in the contest, the Griffins opened up their largest lead in quite some time, ahead by seven (81-74) with only 1:17 left. Rosemont wouldn't surrender, putting together six straight points on a Lafferty three-ball, a Jamier Hughes free throw and a Khai Roberts layup to get Rosemont back to within a single point, training 81-80 with 26 seconds left. After the teams traded free throws as the clock was ticking off the final seconds, Gwynedd's Ty Jones sank the last two free throws to ice the game in the final second. A last-chance desperation shot by the Ravens was unsuccessful.

Khai Roberts was a dead-eye from the field today, hitting 7-for-11 (5-for-7 from outside the arc) for 19 points. Clayton Wolfe continued his string of strong efforts, scoring 18 points (10-for-12 from the charity stripe) in addition to six assists. Jamier Hughes scored 17 and had 12 assists to earn his 10th double-double of the season. Kyle Lafferty also hit double-digits for Rosemont today with 13 points.

Gwynedd's Arron Goodman led the home side, shooting 9-for-12 from the field for 19 points. Ty Jones also was hot from the field, hitting on 7-for-10 on his way to scoring 17 points. Rip Engel (16) and Cedric Elleby (11) also scored in double-digits for the Griffins. Rich Dunham and Courtney Cubbage each had five assists in the game. Goodman, Jones and Cubbage each brought down nine rebounds.

The home Griffins were hot on their home court, hitting on 55% of their field goal attempts, vs. 34% from the Ravens. The Ravens were able to keep close with the Griffins thanks in part to their outside shooting, converting 13 shots from beyond the arc, while Gwynedd Mercy hit only five shots from long distance. The 13 triples matched the program single-game record, tying the existing record of 13 threes scored against Marywood on 1/11/2017.

The Ravens return to the friendly confines of Alumnae Hall in what promises to be an interesting and competitive affair on Wednesday, 2/8 against the nationally-ranked Neumann Knights. The game is the second of a home double-header, scheduled for an 8:00pm start.
