Ravens Sneak Past Mighty Macs

Same Two Teams Will Play Encore to Open Up CSAC Playoffs

IMMACULATA, Pa. (Alumnae Hall) – The Rosemont Ravens won their third straight contest, and 7th of their last eight as they outlasted the host Immaculata Mighty Macs tonight in overtime by a final score of 89-88. With the result, the Ravens have set program records with their 14th win of the season, and their 12th conference win, the most victories in a single season in the program's history. They are now 14-10 overall and 12-5 in the CSAC. The Mighty Macs fell to 12-12 overall (10-7 CSAC). With both teams queuing up for the CSAC postseason tournament, the #4-seeded Ravens will host #5-seeded Immaculata on Monday night in Alumnae Hall at 7:00pm in the quarterfinal round.

Tonight's game was close throughout, with neither team having more than a seven-point lead. The game featured 15 lead changes and 11 tie scores.

The Ravens had to find some answers to Immaculata's scalding shooting from the outside, as the host team hit on 8 of 18 shots from beyond the arc to account for 24 of their 41 first half points. On Rosemont's side of the court, the Ravens hit on only one of eight from long distance, so they were outscored by 21 points from deep range. But even with Immaculata's outside shooting, the Ravens grabbed a 44-41 lead after the first half thanks to hitting 50% from the field overall (17-for-34) and 90% from the foul line (9-for-10). Comparatively, the Mighty Macs made 15-of-38 from the field and only 3-for-5 from the line. Both teams played an extremely close half, with Immaculata's largest lead being seven points early on (11-4 with 16:41 left). The Ravens held the lead for the majority of the half, however, managing to earn their largest lead of the game, six points, after a Mekhi Clemons layup put Rosemont ahead 39-33 with 2:14 left before the break. The half would end with the Ravens in front, 44-41, thanks to Rosemont's lone trey in the half coming out of the hands of Michael Lyde with 41 seconds left. Kyle Lafferty (11) and Clayton Wolfe (10) led the Ravens with double-digits at the break.

Immaculata started the second half with an 8-0 run to grab a six-point lead of their own, 50-44, with 17:23 left, and Rosemont battled to remain close. Their efforts finally paid off when they got out in front at the 9:19 mark after a Khai Roberts three-ball put Rosemont up 64-63. The Mighty Macs again answered with a run, this time a 6-0 advantage to pull ahead 69-64 with 8:15 left. The teams went back-and-forth, starting with a 7-0 advantage for the Ravens to re-take the lead, 71-69 with just under seven minutes remaining. The teams would trade the lead several times down the stretch until an Eric Pittman Jr. layup put Immaculata up by four with only 1:36 left. As has happened so many times this season, the Ravens pulled together at the end, starting with a Jamier Hughes layup that cut the deficit to two points. After a Hughes rare missed free throw, Mekhi Clemons claimed a key offensive rebound and Clayton Wolfe would lay the ball in seconds later to knot the game at 79 apiece, which was the score at the end of regulation. Jamier Hughes put 10 points on the board in the second half, to go with a big eight rebounds. Kyle Lafferty hit for eight points, as did Khai Roberts.

Winning the tip for the overtime period, the Ravens got right to work with a triple from Khai Roberts that would give the Rosemont an 82-79 lead. Rosemont would protect that lead the entire overtime period, but it was not easy to close out the contest. Leading 87-81 after a couple of Hughes free throws with 3:17 left, Immaculata's Roy Ferrell Jr. would capitalize on a couple of layups to pull the Mighty Macs to within a pair, with Rosemont leading 87-85 with two minutes left. A key jumper from Clayton Wolfe would put the Ravens ahead 89-85 with 1 ½ minutes left, but Immaculata's Ferrell responded again with a hit from downtown to whittle Rosemont's lead down to a single point, 89-88 with 1: 11 left. A missed Rosemont shot was followed by a key offensive rebound by Mekhi Clemons, enabling the Ravens to run the game clock down to seven seconds. After a Ravens missed field goal attempt, Immaculata had the ball with a chance to grab the win, but Rosemont's defense forced an off-target three-point attempt by the Mighty Macs, and the Ravens got the defensive board to run out the clock and leave the court happily.

Rosemont placed five players in double-digits, led by Jamier Hughes' 22 points. Hughes also grabbed 12 rebounds for his 13th double-double of the season. Kyle Lafferty put a big 19 points on the board, while teammate Clayton Wolfe scored 17 and Khai Roberts added 15 for the winning side.

Immaculata was led by Roy Ferrell, Jrs. 19 points. Mike Piekarsky scored 16, while Michael Griffin III scored 15, including five shots from long range. Eric Pittman, Jr. also scored 15 for the Mighty Macs.

The Ravens doubled-up on Immaculata when it came to points scored off turnovers with Rosemont earning 24 and Immaculata 12. Rosemont also held an advantage in scoring in the paint, outscoring the Mighty Macs 46-34 in close. The Ravens also doubled-up Immaculata, 8-4 in points scored off of fast breaks.
