Epic Late Comeback Propels Ravens to Upend #15 Neumann in Overtime

Ravens bounce back from 15-point deficit to hand Knights first CSAC loss this season

ROSEMONT, Pa. (Alumnae Hall) – For the second time in three games, the Rosemont men's basketball team toppled one of the top two teams in the CSAC standings. Tonight, the Ravens used a 15-point comeback in the second half to drive the game into overtime. Rosemont outscored #15 Neumann 13-12 in the extra period to stun the visiting Knights, 97-96.

With the result, the Ravens improved to 12-10 (10-5 CSAC), and handed the Knights their first conference loss, as Neumann fell to 20-2 (14-1 CSAC).

The Ravens opened the game with a 6-2 lead thanks to buckets by Charles Presley, Alex Epps-Ortiz, and Jamier Hughes. The two teams jockeyed for position over the next several minutes with the Ravens still ahead 14-13 with 12 minutes left. A layup and two treys from Neumann started to tip the balance towards the Knights as they grabbed a 21-14 lead with 10 minutes left in the first. Rosemont bounced back with a 10-4 run to cut their deficit to two, 29-27 with six minutes left.  Neumann would stretch their lead again with an 8-0 run to take their first double-digit lead, 37-27 with 4:22 on the clock. The teams would play evenly for the rest of the period to go into the break with the Knights up 40-31.

Things for the home side started to look bleak when the Ravens trailed by 15 points, 62-47, with 11:10 left in regulation. Time was running down and the Ravens were having difficulty carving into Neumann's double-digit deficit, with the home side still trailing by 14 points, 68-54 with 6:54 left. Things still looked dark as the Ravens were still trailing by 10, 80-70, with only 2:01 left against the #15 team in the country. A Clayton Wolfe layup was the spark that kicked that momentum into another gear for the Ravens. After a defensive stop, Jamier Hughes hit a bucket from deep to narrow the deficit to five points, 80-75 with 1:36 left. A Neumann free throw put the Ravens back into arrears by six with 1:09 on the clock, but a Clayton Wolfe hit from downtown drew Rosemont back to within one possession, 81-78, with 1:01 left. Another big defensive stop by Rosemont led to Wolfe being fouled, with him converting both free throws with 47 ticks left, Ravens trailing 81-80. The Ravens forced a turnover on a Mekhi Clemons steal and Clemons aimed for another three-ball to put the Ravens in the lead, and his shot was true, giving Rosemont their first lead since they led with 12:07 left in the first half, 83-81 with 46 seconds left.

Down the stretch of the 2nd half, Neumann missed a three-point attempt and turned the ball over on a Clayton Wolfe steal after the Knights got an offensive rebound. Wolfe was fouled and he converted 1-of-2 at the line to put Rosemont ahead 84-81 with 18 seconds remaining in regulation. Neumann's Darian Barnes drained a three with 11 seconds left to knot the teams at 84 points apiece, and that was the score at the end of regulation.

Mekhi Clemons opened the scoring in the overtime period with a triple to give the Ravens an 87-84 lead, but the Knights would quickly respond with a six-point run to grab a 90-87 lead with 3:28 left. Trailing 92-89, Clayton Wolfe hit another triple with 2:56 on the clock to tie the game at 92-92. Two buckets by Neumann would put the Ravens in debt 96-92 with just over 2 minutes left. Again, Rosemont regrouped to put together a 5-0 run down the stretch, holding Neumann off the scoreboard for the last 2:03 of the game to claim the 97-96 victory.

Jamier Hughes set a new program record tonight, making 12-for-21 from the field and a perfect 8-for-8 at the line for 34 points. The 34 points was two better than the previous single-game scoring record, set by Marcus Thomas vs. Cairn twice last season. Hughes earned his 11th double-double of the season with 14 rebounds on the evening.

Hughes had a great supporting cast, with Clayton Wolfe (20 points, six assists, four steals), and Itay Levy (15 points) making key buckets and ending up scoring in double-figures.

The Knights' DeAndre Williams scored 22 with help from Carl Wallace (17), Darian Barnes (17), Tyaire Hudson (14), and Tony Parker (11).

The Ravens made the most of their visits to the foul line, converting on 18-of-20 (90%) compared to Neumann's 14-for-25 (56%). Neumann took advantage of their height underneath, outscoring Rosemont 54-42 in the paint. Rosemont out-rebounded a big Neumann squad, 44-37, and 21-10 off the offensive glass.

The Ravens have the end of their regular season in their sights with only three games remaining before the CSAC Championship Tournament. The road to the tournament begins on Saturday when the Ravens will host the Centenary Cyclones at 3:00pm in Alumnae Hall. The game will be the second in a doubleheader following the women's game against Centenary at 1:00pm.
