Ravens Dropped By Knights At Home

ROSEMONT– The Rosemont Ravens Women's basketball team was outscored in every quarter this evening by the visiting Neumann University Knights en route to a 69-81 defeat tonight at Alumnae Hall. With the loss the Ravens saw their three-game winning streak come to an end, and fall to 6-16 (4-9 CSAC). The Knights improved to 15-7 (10-3 CSAC).

Sisters Ke'alohilani Naone-Carter and Leilani Naone-Carter got Rosemont off to a great start with back-to-back baskets quickly putting the Ravens up 4-0 just 1:52 into the game. Neumann hit the scoreboard for the first time on the night on an AAliya Hayes layup that started an 8-3 run giving the Knights an 8-7 lead with 5:45 to play. Kiley Stevens got Rosemont back on top with a bucket, but Neumann's Nafisa Saunders powered into the lane and laid one in making it 12-11. With 7:35 gone in the first, Lauren Legler hit a three-pointer from the wing giving the Knights their biggest edge of the frame at four, 17-13. The Ravens scored the last points of the quarter on a Leilani Naone-Carter field goal, which had Rosemont down 19-17 at the end of ten minutes.

Neumann opened the second on a 9-4 spurt, pushing the lead to seven after another Legler three ran the score to 28-21. A Ke'alohilani Naone-Carter seemed to give the Ravens some much needed momentum, as they took flight with a 6-2 run of their own, closing the gap to 30-27 still with four minutes to go. The Knights, however, came charging back with a streak of six of nine only halted by a Jasmyn Parker triple. For the rest of the half the teams exchanged scores and the Ravens went to the locker room trailing 39-33.

In the third, neither team was really able to get a lot going as they went back and forth, up and down the floor. Rosemont's largest run of the stanza was 6-0, which pulled the game back into a tie at 47 with 5:52 gone. The Knights capped the segment off on an 11-3 push to hold a 58-50 lead after three.

For 6:18 of the final quarter the teams traded buckets with Rosemont never really able to close the gap. A basket from Nafisa Saunders sent the Knights out to an 18-point lead at 76-58. Rosemont wrapped up the game on an 11-5 sprint, but it was a little too late, and they left the floor falling 81-69.

Rosemont was led by three players in double-figures. Freshman Ke'alohilani Naone-Carter scored a team-high 23. Sister Leilani Naone-Carter finished one rebound shy of a double-double with 17 points and team-high nine rebounds. Shirle Brown also hit double-digits with 13.

Neumann was led by AAliya Hayes who finished with a double-double netting a game-high 26, and pulling down 14 boards. Lauren Legler picked up 17, while Nafisa Saunders contributed 24 off the bench.

On the night, the Knights were just the hotter shooting team, as they went 48.4% from the floor to the Ravens 41.5%. Neumann was 7-16 from beyond the arc, compared to Rosemont 4-14. The Knights also held the edge on the charity stripe going 14-18, while the Ravens were 11-19. Rosemont did hold onto the ball well, committing 11 turnovers, to Neumann's 19.

Next for Rosemont will be Women's Basketball Alumni Day when they host Centenary University on Saturday. Tip-off between the Ravens and the Cyclones is set for 1pm. The Men's game will follow at around 3pm.
