The Ravens (7-16) took 2 tough losses at the hands of the Highlanders of Carin (12-11). The Game 1 final was 8-0 and Game 2 ended with a score of 2-0.
Getting the start for Game 1 of the doubleheader was junior David McKinney who pitched 5 innings of 5-run baseball (4 Earned) while tallying 2 strikeouts. On the offensive side, the Ravens had a rough day at the office only notching 1 hit, which came off the bat of junior Bobby DiDonato. Graduate student Mike Denton had this to say after Game 1: "It was just a tough day today for us. We hit the ball around; they just made all the plays."
Game 2 followed a different script with the focus being on junior Zachary Nutley, who tossed a gritty 8 innings of 2-run baseball. Nutley allowed 2 runs (one earned) on 7 hits on only 80 pitches. A much-needed outing on the mound for the Ravens helped keep the ball game in reach. Offensively the Ravens faired a bit better totaling 5 hits, but just could not get a timely one to put the Ravens on the board. Hitters of note for Game 2 were juniors Chris Walton, Samson Gerner, David McKinney, and senior Sean Smith with each tallying a hit, with Smith leading the way for the Ravens with a 2-hit performance. McKinney also notched a stolen base. Junior Bobby DiDonato and graduate student Dominic Fernicola snagged bases with DiDonato snagging 2 and Fernicola with 1.
"We played a great second game defensively behind a terrific pitching performance by Zach (Nutley)" Head Coach Ross Trachtenberg said after the doubleheader. "The offensive side of the game just did not come together today. Fortunately, we get right back on the field tomorrow and Monday for some important conference games."
The Ravens look to earn a victory against Cairn in the final game of the United East Conference series against the Highlanders tomorrow, Sunday, April 7th. First pitch is scheduled for 6 PM at Heuser Park.
