Ravens win both over St. Joseph's University Brooklyn to improve to 5-4 on the season
Ravens walk it off 7-6 to win game one
Senior RHP Zachary Nutley went out for his third start of the season and tossed a strong 5 innings, striking out 1, and giving up 3 (1 earned). In relief came freshman Collin McCarron. McCarron went 1 inning, striking out 2. Lastly, senior Brett Angelillo came in to relieve in the 7th inning for the Ravens and earned the win. Head Coach Ross Trachtenberg had this to say after the game: "Zach has had three really strong starts for us in the early part of this season. Collin and Brett came into some big spots and competed well to give us a chance to win the game."
Offensively, the Ravens tallied 9 hits in Game 1. The Ravens were out in front early thanks to a sac-fly from senior Samson Gerner to give the Ravens a 1-0 lead in the first. In the bottom of the third, sophomore Shane Lennon gave the Ravens a 2-1 lead with a bases-loaded walk, forcing in an RBI.
It was a close game right into the bottom of the 7th, as the Ravens saw themselves fighting from behind down 6-2. Senior David McKinney led off the inning for the Ravens with a double down the line. Next up came Jamen Palladino who also doubled, cutting the lead to 6-3. A couple of batters later, there was a passed ball to score Palladino and allowing Gerner to advance to third, making it a 6-4 ball game. During Connor Cook's at-bat, there was another passed ball allowing Gerner to score, making it a 6-5 ball game. With two outs, and the tying run 90 ft away, Chris Walton hit a hard line-drive to second tying the game at 6-6. McKinney, who started the inning, was also the one who ended it. McKinney had a walk off walk scoring junior Brandon Peake giving the Ravens a 7-6 win.
Senior Jimmy Rodier had this to say about the come from behind win, "It was nice to see the guy's rally and put together some offense."
Ravens win game two 12-3
Tim Shell got the start for the Ravens, going 4.1 innings, giving up 3 runs. Lennon came in relief of Shell, going 1.2 for the Ravens earning the win. Lastly, Tyler Monzo closed out the game going 1 inning with 1 strikeout. Coach Trachtenberg said after the game: "Playing errorless baseball in Game 2 really took pressure off our pitchers. Our outfield made great plays throughout the day and Luke Franklin made some terrific plays as well at short."
Offensively, the Ravens tallied 15 hits in Game 2. In the bottom of the third, the Ravens got their first two runs on the board thanks to McKinney, and an RBI single from centerfielder Nolan Dunn. In the bottom of the fourth, the Ravens would get their first lead of the game thanks to a Luke Franklin sac-fly to make it a 3-2 game. In the 5th, the Ravens would extend their lead 11-3 as they tallied on 8 runs with 9 straight hits, all with two outs.
"I really thought today was a good opportunity for us to get out there and get two wins. Although not pretty, I'm really proud of the way we battled as a team. Excited to keep this momentum going into Albright tomorrow and into the following week as conference play begins." - Tyler Monzo, junior left-handed pitcher.
Assistant Coach, Mike Denton also shared: "We had strong pitching in both games, from our starters to the bullpen. They kept us in the game and helped us seize the momentum that led to an offensive explosion in both games."
Finally junior third baseman Nick Skoufalos said after Game 2: "Proud of the way guys made the most of their opportunities today across the board. Awesome to get two big wins today."
